This site-specific installation is a unique instrument created for the former temple of San Diego in Mexico City: a seventeenth century building now converted into a New Media exhibition space. Its architecture was planned for religious services, giving it very specific acoustic qualities. Candiani chose to reinterpret the area once dedicated to the choir to install a 'speaking machine' or vox mechanica, an automaton that reproduces both synthesized human voice and music.
Candiani works in multiple media; while her early work employed textile as a metaphor for the body and gender politics, she has more recently ventured into sound art and language to create different interactive poetic devices that emulate human qualities.
